Ingredients

To make a classic bread pudding, you’ll need the following ingredients:

6 cups of day-old bread (French bread, brioche, or challah), cubed
2 cups of milk
1 cup of heavy cream
4 large eggs
3/4 cup of granulated sugar
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup of raisins (optional)
2 tablespoons of butter, melted
Powdered sugar (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

Cube the Bread: Cut the day-old bread into 1-inch cubes. If the bread is fresh, you can dry it out in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet, and bake for 10-15 minutes until they are dry but not toasted.

Grease the Baking Dish: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Step 2: Make the Custard Mixture

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Add Bread and Raisins: Place the bread cubes and raisins (if using) into the prepared baking dish. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Press down lightly with a spatula to submerge the bread.

Step 3: Let It Soak

Soak the Bread: Let the bread soak in the custard mixture for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This allows the bread to absorb the flavors and moisture, resulting in a richer pudding.

Preheat the Oven: While the bread is soaking, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 4: Bake the Bread Pudding

Prepare for Baking: Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the soaked bread mixture.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Cool Slightly: Allow the bread pudding to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Garnish: Dust with powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness and presentation.
Serve: Bread pudding can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. Serve it as is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, or a dollop of whipped cream.

Tips for the Best Bread Pudding

Use Stale Bread: Day-old bread works best as it absorbs the custard mixture better without becoming too mushy.
Customize: Add-ins like chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruits can add extra flavor and texture to your bread pudding.
Flavor Variations: Experiment with different spices, such as allspice or cardamom, to give your bread pudding a unique twist.

FAQs

Can I use any type of bread for bread pudding?

Yes, you can use various types of bread such as French bread, brioche, challah, or even leftover sandwich bread. Day-old or slightly stale bread works best as it absorbs the custard mixture better.

How do I prevent my bread pudding from becoming too soggy?

To prevent sogginess, use day-old bread and ensure it is adequately dried before soaking in the custard mixture. Additionally, let the bread soak for an appropriate amount of time to absorb the flavors without becoming overly saturated.

Can I add other ingredients to my bread pudding?

Absolutely! You can customize your bread pudding by adding ingredients like chocolate chips, nuts, dried fruits, or different spices. These additions can enhance the flavor and texture of the dessert.
